VLE Support have recently teamed up with Southampton City College on a pioneering MoLeNET project, where students on Work Based Learning courses have been able to submit work to tutors via eTracker, by using mobile phones and other portable devices.
VLE Support have recently developed a new ePortfolio module for eTracker, which enables students to upload files to eTracker, associate particular files with specific assessment criteria and share these files with their course tutors. This can now be achieved via smartphones and other mobile devices with internet connectivity, such as PDAs – perfect for students on work based learning placements, who are required to attend college very infrequently.
A Construction student could, for example, take a photograph of the work he/she has produced with their mobile phone, and submit it to his/her teacher with the touch of a few buttons! The relevant teacher would then receive an email alert and would then be able to log in to eTracker and give feedback on the work submitted and send this back to the student, who in turn would also receive an email notification that feedback had been submitted against his/her work.
Mike Wilson, of Southampton City College said: “I cold tested it yesterday … and its brilliant…We're really really pleased with the ePortfolio and looking forward to using it with our students next week”. At the college, more than fifty students have already received PDAs, which have been received with great excitement. Over the next few weeks, the students will receive training on how to use these devices to aid and record their learning.
